The Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area offers visitors a blend of historical sites, ocean and bay beaches, swimming, hiking, birding, a spectacular holly forest, naturist areas and other recreation activities. The beach allows dogs, providing they are on a leash. Dogs are not allowed on the eastern or Atlantic shore.

Lifeguardds, concession stands and bathhouses are provided.
